LEGO® ART: Gustav Klimt – The Kiss [31221]

LEGO has just unveiled its largest Art masterpiece yet, and it is an absolute stunning interpretation of one of the world's most romantic and iconic paintings.

Before we dive into the bricks, let’s talk about the master behind the canvas.

Who Was Gustav Klimt?

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian modernist painter who became the leading figure of the Vienna Secession movement at the turn of the last century. Known for his radical, decorative style, Klimt wasn't afraid to break traditional art rules.

His most famous era—known as the Golden Phase—was heavily inspired by Byzantine mosaics he saw during a trip to Ravenna, Italy. He began incorporating actual gold leaf into his oil paintings, creating shimmering, luxurious textures that captured emotion and beauty like nothing else before it.

The Story Behind The Kiss

Painted between 1907 and 1908 at the high point of his Golden Phase, The Kiss depicts a couple wrapped in a passionate, intimate embrace on the edge of a flower-filled meadow.

Look closely at the clothing: the man is adorned in bold, geometric black and white rectangles, while the woman is enveloped in soft, flowing colourful circles and floral patterns. It’s a perfect visual contrast of masculine and feminine energy, completely surrounded by a shimmering backdrop of gold. The original masterpiece hangs proudly in the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, drawing millions of visitors every year.
