Kevin Evans – Building Cities, Stories and Community
From a childhood box of bricks to Marvel MOCs, cityscapes and Rainbow Bricks
Every LEGO builder has a story, and for Kevin Evans from Anna Bay, a Rainbow Bricks member since 2013, it all began with a big box of LEGO bricks, a childhood imagination and a love of creating.
Today, Kevin enjoys bringing LEGO worlds to life, from detailed cityscapes to Marvel-inspired creations. As a member of Rainbow Bricks, he also believes that LEGO is about much more than the models themselves. It's about sharing a passion, supporting fellow builders and bringing joy to the community.
A childhood love of LEGO
Kevin's LEGO journey began when he was around five or six years old.
"I remember having a big box of LEGO elements, similar to the Creator Classic boxes of today. It had everything you needed to build with."
Like many LEGO fans, Kevin eventually entered what the Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOL) community calls a dark age — a period when LEGO takes a back seat as other interests and life take over.
For Kevin, that happened around the age of 11 or 12. It would be a long break before LEGO became a major part of his life again.
But sometimes, the bricks have a way of finding their way back into our lives.
Building cities and bringing sets to life
Today, LEGO City and Marvel are among Kevin's favourite themes. He particularly enjoys building cities and cityscapes, creating environments that give LEGO models a sense of place and tell a bigger story.
Kevin enjoys both following official LEGO sets and creating his own models, often combining the two to produce detailed dioramas.
For him, it's about more than simply putting a model together. It's about giving it an environment — recreating a suburban street as realistically as possible or building a sprawling cityscape filled with detail.
It's this combination of creativity, scenery and storytelling that makes his builds special.
A favourite build that keeps evolving
One creation stands out above the rest: Kevin's Avengers Tower MOC, which he first built in 2015.
Rather than considering it finished, Kevin continues to revisit and improve the model. Its most recent major update included a new lighting system, adding another dimension to the display.
As new Marvel minifigures arrive and new films are released, Kevin makes further changes to keep the creation evolving.
It's a great example of what makes building your own LEGO creations so rewarding. A favourite model doesn't have to be finished once and for all. It can grow and change alongside the builder.
Behind the bricks
Kevin has a LEGO room, although it's about to be packed away temporarily while he and his family prepare for a move to a new house.
In the meantime, a small photography space will become his building area.
Photography is another of Kevin's interests, and it complements his love of LEGO by giving him a way to capture his creations and share the details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Sometimes, a change of circumstances simply means finding a new way to keep creating.
Rainbow Bricks: A community built on support
Kevin has been involved in the story of Rainbow Bricks from the beginning. His wife established the group with his support and the help of several other builders who enjoy creating with every colour in the LEGO palette.
That inclusive spirit remains an important part of the community.
Rainbow Bricks welcomes different building styles, interests and ideas, with members supporting one another and helping fellow builders wherever they can.
For Kevin, one of the most rewarding parts of exhibiting at events is seeing the joy on visitors' faces as they explore the displays.
He also enjoys talking with exhibitors about their future projects and sharing conversations about LEGO.
And there's another important part of the experience: Rainbow Bricks events give back to charity partners in the local communities where the events are held.
It means that a shared love of LEGO can create connections, inspire creativity and make a genuine difference.
What's next on Kevin's building list?
Kevin has a couple of ambitious ideas in mind.
One is a minifigure-scale version of the Malibu Mansion from Iron Man 3. Another is a LEGO interpretation of the Tour de France, the famous cycling road race.
The Tour de France concept particularly appeals because of the variety of landscapes along the route — from mountain ranges and cityscapes to the many different environments in between.
Either project would offer plenty of opportunities for detailed scenery and storytelling, two things Kevin enjoys most about building.
We look forward to seeing which idea makes it from the drawing board to the bricks!
Kevin's tip for new builders
Asked what advice he'd give someone just starting out, Kevin's answer reflects the community spirit at the heart of Rainbow Bricks:
"Always ask others how they build something; most builders are happy to help."
Whether it's a clever technique on a display table or a lighting trick in a MOC, a simple question at an event can teach you more than hours of trial and error.
The story behind the bricks
Kevin's LEGO journey has taken him from childhood building sessions to detailed Marvel creations, photography and helping grow a community that celebrates builders of all kinds.
His story is a reminder that LEGO can be many things: a creative outlet, a lifelong interest, a way to connect with others and an opportunity to give something back.
And sometimes, all it takes to start the next adventure is a box of bricks and an idea.
Thanks, Kevin, for sharing your LEGO journey with Rainbow Bricks!
