Sydney’s New LEGO Certified Store

March 21st, 2019

On Monday night a few Rainbow Bricks’ members were part of the lucky few invited to attend a special AFOL preview night at the new flagship LEGO Store in Sydney. And then this morning a couple of Rainbow Bricks Members attend the opening of the store.

The store is at Westfields Bondi Junction, just down from the Apple Store. We used the trains to get there and it was so much better than driving through Sydney to get to the store.

If you have been into a LEGO store before it has a similar look and style. While not the largest LEGO store, it is on two levels with the PAB and the more adult themes upstairs on the mezzanine level. The front of the store has the latest sets (Mustang and The Flintstones) on display with a small Build Area near them.

The store has a VIP Program from opening which is redeemable at the Sydney store only at the moment. The program is 1 points for every $1.50 spent. Works out to be 5% or $5 for every $100 spent, but need 100 points and get $7.5 credit, which is not bad.

The Pick A Brick Wall wasn’t fully stocked on the Monday night but still had lots of nice parts. The wall has since been completely stocked. The PAB wall is up the stairs at the back of the store, there is also a lift for those with mobility issues and it’s painted in a LEGO theme. The stairs have a short History of LEGO painted on the walls.
Small cup are $14.99 and large cups $29.99.
The wall was very popular on Monday night with the AFOLs in attendance. Lots of cups were filled! 😃 And I’m should this will continue now the store is open. It’s a great way to bulk up on parts.

There were no polybags other than the Xtra polybag to buy and no seasonal sets currently either. Hopefully this will be addressed now the store is opened. The engraving machine wasn’t setup yet either.

The Build A Minifig station was down stairs. You can build your own custom miniiigure using the elements available. The night we were there it had some nice parts in it. These parts will change as elements come and go out of stock.

Of course, there are LEGO brick-built statues and murals on display, as well as many sets. See the photos to see what the store has.

The opening day exclusive was the LEGO Brand Retail Store Set (40145) when you spend $199 or more in store.

The store charges full RRP for Sets but it’s expected to have all sets available as soon as they released by LEGO, which is great. Definitely sign up for the VIP program as it will help to save money on future purchases. The store is also expected to have polybags and other sets not normally available here through the other retailers.

REVIEW: LEGO Creator Expert Vestas Wind Turbine

December 28th, 2018

LEGO Creator Expert Vestas Wind Turbine

Set Number: 10268
Pieces: 826
Build Time: approximately 3.5 hours

Currently available from LEGO Shop@Home: shop.lego.com/en-AU/product/Vestas-Wind-Turbine-10268

For this build I was inspired by the box art to take it outside and build it one morning. I set up a build table in the backyard and had a relaxing morning building the set over the space of about 3.5 hours. This included time putting out some washing, chatting with my wife and having breakfast! 😊 It also included time looking for parts! Why? Because the 12 bags are not numbered, and I decided it wasn't too big a build to sort it into colours and similar parts.

This set is based on an earlier promotional set number 4999 produced in 2008 for Vestas employees only.

The instruction book has serval pages with information on wind power and on the new sustainable LEGO trees in this set, which are made from plant-based plastics. These trees will appear in more sets going forward

We start with the Minifigs and in this set there are 3. They are standard looking minifigures with one female, and two males who are employees of Vestas with the Vestas logo printed on their torso.

The first build is the maintenance truck and maintenance gear which goes in the back of the truck. Again, it’s a pretty standard build but still fun to put together. The main feature would be the Vestas logo on the side of the van.

Next, we are on to the base of the build, café and hill, and so to strengthen this section I added 4 16x16 green plates to it. I will be displaying this set in our Rainbow City Layout and for transportation reason I wanted a base that was more solid and had less flex.

The retro looking cafe is a simple build in the style of 70’s/80’s sets. It’s cool looking, but not my style and I may give it an upgrade down the track, if I get time. 😊

The hill which the Turbine sits in is used to hide the battery box and to anchor the tower to the base. This is the first set I have built that has the green BURPs (Big Ugly Rock Pieces) in it. They make for a solid and quickly build hill which can be add to if you want to modify the look of the hill. With a few more BURPs you could make it a complete hill. The anchor point is very clever and works well. I have been able to remove the tower and reattach it easily which for me is important for transportation to and from Brickfest events.

The tower itself is a solid design and hides the power cable inside it for the motor in the blade section. The motor and the gearing are cleanly contained inside the motor section of the tower. There is quite of bit of Technics building involved in this section but that is to be expected considering it's the heart of the build.

The blades are well built and big, and they can be pinned in two different ways, flat or angular. Angular is how they are on real Wind Turbines. Once the blades are pinned into place the build is finished and we are real to let rip! It's very satisfying when you turn it on and it works perfectly.

While it maybe a simple build in general that doesn't matter as it a great working set and at a metre tall will stand over most other LEGO creations in your LEGO city.
